TIFFANY & Co New York vers 1890 Orchid brooch in 14 karat (585 thousandths) yellow gold, the petals covered with yellow enamel speckled with brown, the pistil of a deeper yellow set with rose-cut diamonds, the stem set with demantoid garnets and round rubies. Signed Tiffany & Co New York. Representing in a very naturalist way a Grammatophyllum speciosum orchid called tiger orchid or giant orchid. Twenty-five orchids were designed by Paulding Farnham (1859-1927) for the 1889 World's Fair, an American jewelry designer, sculptor and metallurgist who worked for Tiffany & Co. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
