This wooden Virgin and Child with a classicizing look and great purity of line is the work of a sculptor whose still limited body of work has been gradually coming out of the shadows for the last ten years. It was sculpted by an artist from Dieppe who was active at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, named Jean Gaulette. If his life is completely unknown to us, we recognize his great technical mastery and a beautiful quality of adaptation to different precious materials, wood, mother of pearl and ivory. To date, six works signed by him are known and a seventh is attributed to him. They are two mother-of-pearl medallions representing the life of Alexander kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, three Christs on the cross - two in fruitwood, the first one presented at the Château-Musée de Dieppe and the second one sold at a public auction in Berlin in 2009 (H.44 cm, signed "I. GAULETTE F." Lempertz sale of November 21, 2009, lot 1181), the last one in ivory kept in the Treasury of the Cathedral of Besançon, two Virgins with Child in ivory: the first one signed and kept in Berlin, the other one only attributed and exposed in the historical and archaeological museum of Orléans. Our work is closely related to the beautiful Virgin and Child in ivory in the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. It has the same signature on the three front sides of the octagonal base, the same slightly contrapposto attitude with the foot overhanging, and a drapery animated by the same network of moving and excavated folds. This unpublished statuette is added to the seven works already known and adds to the now forgotten reputation of the artist who must have been international during his lifetime.
