Small shield Aire Asmat, Irian Jaya, Indonesia Medium-hard wood, pigments, plant fibers H. 60 cm Provenance : - Etude Castar-Hara, sale March 1, 2015, reproduced under lot 24 - Former Jean-Louis Roiseus collection, Sens Decorated with motifs treated in light relief, tinted red ochre on a white reserve background, and featuring stylized animals. A people living in the marshy regions of the upper Pomatsj River (southwest New Guinea), the Asmat carved their work from rare stones imported from the interior of the island, but also using shells or fine points carved from bamboo.
