Convict work, New Caledonia (?) - Lot 156
Convict work, New Caledonia (?) Coconut, mother-of-pearl L. 13,5 cm Period: 19th Provenance: Origine Auction, October 29, 2016, reproduced under lot 487 Estimate: 700/1,000 euros Various narrative scenes adorn this object, including a blessing, and the pursuit of a fugitive. On one end, a face with moustache and thick eyebrows, a mother-of-pearl pastille still present on one of the eyes. On the other, a plant-inspired motif. Like the work of sailors during their long crossings, this type of object bears witness to daily life, in this case that of a convict, probably deported to New Caledonia. The deep luster lends a noble touch to this piece.
