Joao Carlos GALVAO (1941) - Lot 195
Joao Carlos GALVAO (1941) Op-Art structure Sculpture in red lacquered wood, signed and located "Rio" on back Dim. 100 x 100 x 17 cm João Carlos Galvão plays an important role in the optical art movement (or Op Art) through his explorations of geometry, visual illusions and spatial interactions in his sculptural works. Influenced by major Op Art figures such as Victor Vasarely and Yvaral, with whom he worked in Paris, Galvão uses modular forms and wooden reliefs to create dynamic compositions that change according to the viewer's point of view. In his works, he exploits repetitive motifs and the relationship between light and shadow to generate illusions of depth and movement. His sculptures are not static: they invite the observer to move around them, making the visual experience participatory and immersive, a key feature of Op Art. By participating in exhibitions such as the São Paulo Biennial and "Réalité Nouvelle" in Paris, Galvão has contributed to the dissemination of this art form in Brazil and worldwide, while enriching sculptural practice within the framework of kinetic and optical art.
