Thomas Ruff used the granolithography technique for his "Sterne" (Stars) series, created between 1989 and 1992. The series depicts images of the night sky, a fascination of the artist's since childhood. Unable to capture satisfactory images himself due to light pollution and inadequate equipment, Ruff acquired photographic archives from the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Southern Hemisphere catalog. These negatives, taken with advanced telescopes in Chile, constituted scientific bases that Ruff reinterpreted artistically.
