Louis MARCOUSSIS (1883-1941) - Lot 161
Louis MARCOUSSIS (1883-1941)
Untitled, circa 1935
Oil on canvas signed lower left
Size: 38 x 46 cm Slight lifting
Initially influenced by Impressionism and Symbolism, Louis Marcoussis quickly adopted Cubism after meeting Picasso and Braque around 1911. His style evolved towards a more analytical cubism, often characterized by a meticulous decomposition of forms and a subtly nuanced palette. Unlike some cubists who favored austere compositions, Marcoussis sometimes inserted dreamlike, poetic elements into his works.
In the 1930s, his work became more refined and profound. He produced a number of still lifes, landscapes and complex compositions that blended abstraction and figuration. Marcoussis was influenced by the evolution of Cubism towards a more synthetic and refined style. He remained close to Parisian artistic circles, notably the Surrealists, although he never officially joined their movement. His works sometimes incorporate poetic and mysterious elements reminiscent of Surrealism, while retaining the rigor of Cubism.
