Autograph letter from London, May 15, 1769, to M. Foulon in Russia, St. Petersburg.
In this early autograph minute, the Chevalier d'Eon recommends a young master-at-arms, Pierre Chariot, a former pupil of "Réda, one of the most skilful maitres d'armes in Paris, established in London". Chariot wishes to seek his fortune in St. Petersburg, where he hopes to settle for his own happiness and that of Russia, a country about which the Chevalier says "there has never been in this country any master-at-arms as expert as he is in this art; all those I have seen there in the past were massacres or deserters".
The letter forms two pages in-4 and contains strikethroughs and corrections.
