[BOIZOT] Albert SAMAIN. - Lot 280
[BOIZOT] Albert SAMAIN.
Xanthis.
Paris, Carteret, 1917, in-8 leaves in decorated cover, double titled slipcase.
Illustrated with 19 original color wood-engraved compositions by Emile Boizot, including a frontispiece, and culs-de-lampe.
This copy is one of 120 on vellum, unjustified.
It has the color woodcut suite in duplicate; it is enriched by 50 tracing sheets illustrated with some of the woodcuts in several states; it also contains a copy of the "bon à tirer" with parts of the text without the illustration, parts of the text and illustrations mounted with handwritten indications, and the copy of Samain's "Contes", published by Mercure de France in 1902, containing here only the text of "Xanthis", which was used for the layout of Carteret's edition.
Together, these make a unique copy, with a signed autograph letter from publisher L. Carteret, dated December 27, 1915, to illustrator E. Boizot asking him to deliver his last woodcuts so that he could complete Xanthis.
