[Sonia DELAUNAY, Sarah Sophie Stern Terk dite] Blaise CENDRA - Lot 87
[Sonia DELAUNAY, Sarah Sophie Stern Terk dite] Blaise CENDRARS. La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France. Simultaneous colors by Mme Delaunay-Terk. Paris, Editions des Hommes Nouveaux,1913, set of four sheets laminated on canvas, one after the other, presented in the form of a scroll held together by two wooden logs. The elongated vertical format measures 2m high (and 36cm wide), a veritable vertical artist's book. Unlike a poem printed in a book, here poem and painting are visible at a glance. The text of the poem, in free verse, i.e. without rhyme or punctuation, is printed on the right, with the exception of the title, and ornamented with colored areas, and on the left is the abstract composition in the form of arcs of colored circles printed with a stencil. Facsimile of the deluxe edition limited to 150 numbered copies, one of 114 on simili Japon, no. 100. The poem recounts the journey of young Blaise (16) as he travels on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Kharbin in the company of Jehanne, counting off the names of the stations they pass as they go. A metaphorical journey through Siberia and war-torn Russia to reach Paris, represented by the Eiffel Tower at the bottom of the scroll, one of only two figurative forms in the work (along with the green disk circled in orange representing the Ferris Wheel).
