[Jacques de LANÇON to Chevalier d'ÉON] - Lot 63
[Jacques de LANÇON to Chevalier d'ÉON] Autograph letters signed by Monsieur de Lançon, écuyer, Commandant de la Grande Ecurie du Roi à Versailles, addressed to Mlle la Chevalière d'Eon in London, in 1786, 1787 and 1788. The file comprises 35 letters in 94 in-4 pages, very often addressed, sometimes with wax seal or trace of wax seal. The first letters, from 1786 and early 1787, concern Sieur Angelo, a friend of La Chevalière, who was employed to buy horses for the King of Sardinia, and his eventual withdrawal in favor of M. de Nilly. M. de Lançon informs the Chevalière of all the important events taking place in France, such as Mme de Polignac's resignation, M. de Vergenne's death, the description of the "Assemblée de notables" and its offices, M. de Calonne's proposals and his exile with M. de Miromesnil, the thanking of M. de Fourqueux as his replacement, the reform of the stud farms, M. de Saint-George's assault, relations between the British nation and the Prince of Wales, d'Eon's eventual return to Tonnerre, and all the problems of the crisis in France. From 1788, Lançon announced his resignation as Commandant des Ecuries, somewhat dismissed, with pension restrictions. Dissatisfied, he plans to go and serve in England as La Chevalière. This set is preceded by 5 autograph letters signed by the same de Lançon, two of which show the friendship between the two characters (January 14, 1780 and December 29, 1781), as well as a letter on the birth of the Dauphin (November 1781), and two letters from 1783, one of which concerns the death of their friend M. Levasseur. All presented in a folder hand-titled by La Chevalière.
