Vincennes - Lot 124
Vincennes Two-figure group in white enameled soft porcelain of the first size depicting two children around a fish, on a rock base. 18th century, circa 1750. H. 22 cm. Chip to an index finger. This rare group was produced in two sizes by the Manufacture de Vincennes. Thirty groups named Enfants tenant un dauphin (Children holding a dolphin) are mentioned in the inventory of the factory's stock in October 1752. The marchand-mercier Bazin purchased seven of these groups in 1754 at a price of 15 livres for the second size and 21 livres for the largest. The model was, with variations, made by the Meissen, Mennecy, Pont-aux-Choux, Chelsea, Longton Hall and Bow factories. In an in-depth study of the subject, John Mallet has suggested several possible sources: a candlestick by Thomas Germain and a 1672 fountain by Jean-Baptiste Tuby for Versailles after a drawing by Charles Lebrun (John Mallet, "two children and a fish", The French Porcelain Society Journal, 2003, pp. 131-148. A copy of the second size is reproduced by Svend Eriksen and Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain, no. 23, p. 209 and one of the first size by John Mallet, op. cit. p. 133. Lot presented by Cyrille Froissart
